The Dark

Hello.
Going back to school tomorrow... kill me now.
So, last night, I stayed up till 5am reading a book called "The Secret Hour" (it's the first book in the Midnighters Trilogy) and OH MY GOD, it's amazing. So, what is this book about? I'll give a brief summary:

So there are these extremely old creatures called Darklings (not sure how I feel about the name but nevermind). They're very old... like, ten thousand years old. The Darklings used to feed off humans at night which is why we humans have this primal fear of the dark. But then humans found fire and weapons etc. which scared the Darklings- because they are so old, new stuff scares them. Humans hunted the Darklings almost into extinction so the Darklings made an extra hour, after midnight and they wrapped it up so tightly that almost all humans are unaware of it. It's called the Blue Hour and technology eg. fire, torches, radio doesn't work there because they are so afraid of new things. But, for some reason, the Blue Hour exists only at certain points in the world and Bixby, Oklahoma, is one of them.

Okay, fast-forward to 2004 ish (when the book was published). Jessica Day moves to Bixby and starts having these strange dreams, at least, that's what she assumes they are at first. But the dreams soon turn into nightmares- she is chased by the Darklings, they try to attack her but she manages to escape them.

At her new school is a group of students: Dess, Rex and Melissa who are also able to live the Blue Hour- they meet with in the Blue Hour and make her realise that it's not a dream. The next day, they explain that the Darklings don't usually attack unprovoked, meaning that they're scared of Jessica. They also show her some ways to protect herself- Darklings are terrified of new metals- stainless steal being one of them. They are also scared of the number 13 so if you shout a thirteen letter word like "ABNORMALITIES" then they would run away. 39 letter words are better but rare so you'd have to make a phrase out of three thirteen letter words.

And that is all I'm going to say for now, but read the book, it's great. Hopefully the school library has the sequels. I put some fan art down below (I don't own it, credits go to http://shira-chan.deviantart.com/art/The-Midnighters-46413998 and http://scotty9359.deviantart.com/art/Midnighters-Secret-Hour-48751500)

But anyway, as I often find myself laying away staring into the dark corners of my bedroom, wondering what hellish beasts lurk in the shadows, I'm now keeping a stainless steel butter knife and "AERODYNAMICAL BIOPHYSICISTS BRAINSTORMING" on my bedside table. Am I crazy? Maybe a bit. I don't believe in ghosts or monsters or any of that shit but having some thirteen letter words and some steel is just a little placebo that (for some bizarre reason) makes me feel safe, kind of.
Okay, I should probably go to face my real life-rational fears *ahem, a science project and ending up living in a cardboard box somewhere on the pavement, ahem* and stop wasting my life by living in fiction.

Bye, for now.
(Also, sorry if I don't post as much when I'm back at school, I have exams and stuff but thank you for taking the time to read my stuff. Also, I looked at the blog demographics- it's really interesting to see where you're readers are from... not in a stalker-like way but just out of curiosity. A lot of you are from the UK, where I am, some from America, a few in Germany, Belgium and one in Morocco!  . So, er, hi!)
